Who Can Apply for the Permit?
For residential building projects:
- The owner of an existing single-family dwelling, or
- A contractor with a State Residential License (must have a hard copy on file with the City
For commercial building projects:
Decks, additions, garages or new homes need 2 sets of building plans, including 2 sets of site plans, showing the property lines and where the building is on the property and all other dimensions.

How Do I Schedule an Inspection?
The contractor must schedule the inspection. Call the Inspections Department at 952-548-6320 (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) or use the online request form. Schedule your inspection at least 24 hours in advance. When calling for an inspection you will be asked to provide the address, permit number and type of inspection you are requesting. Inspections are done 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. and are scheduled every half hour.
