Hopkins Celebrates Juneteenth

At their Council meeting on June 15, the City Council of Hopkins issued a proclamation recognizing June 19, 2021 as Juneteenth. Juneteenth, which has been celebrated by the African American community for over 150 years, commemorates the day news of freedom reached Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation proclamation abolishing slavery.

A celebration of the holiday will be held by local entrepreneur and Hopkins School District teacher, Jessica Winnie and her business, Minnesota Black Box, at the Hopkins Center for the Arts on June 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., The event is free and will celebrate the holiday through healing, building and supporting local Black-owned businesses.
